Forward head posture (FHP), also known as “tech neck” or “nerd neck,” is a common postural deformity where the head is positioned forward of its natural alignment with the spine. This condition occurs when the head leans forward, causing the ears to be out of the body’s vertical midline. It is often caused by prolonged use of electronic devices, such as smartphones and computers, which leads to the head tilting forward to view screens. Other contributing factors include poor posture while sitting or standing, carrying heavy backpacks, and certain occupations that require leaning forward for extended periods.
FHP can result in various symptoms, including neck pain, upper back pain, headaches, muscle tightness, and decreased range of motion in the neck. The altered alignment of the head and neck can also lead to more severe issues such as herniated discs, cervical spine arthritis, and respiratory problems. The condition can be corrected through exercises, stretching, ergonomic adjustments, and, in some cases, chiropractic care or physical therapy.
